Three Wise Men takes one of the most recognizable figures of the Christmas season and gives him an entirely different meaning.
The Three Wise Men traveled bearing gifts to honor the greatest gift ever given to the world, Jesus Christ. Somewhere along the way, Christmas became increasingly associated with another gift giver, Santa Claus. I thought it would be interesting to bring those two traditions together in a way that reminds us what Christmas is truly about.
Using my fascination with Cubism and its ability to present multiple perspectives within a single image, I reimagined Santa as three distinct faces sharing one familiar red hat and white beard. What initially appears to be a whimsical portrait of Santa becomes something more meaningful upon closer inspection.
The colorful swirls, festive holly, and star-filled winter sky maintain the familiar joy of the season, while the three faces invite the viewer to look beyond the commercial traditions of Christmas and remember its spiritual significance.
Three Wise Men is a playful visual contradiction with a serious message. By transforming a secular symbol of gift-giving into a representation of the biblical Wise Men, I wanted to redirect attention to the greatest gift of all, the birth of Jesus Christ.
