Brian Williams — Artist
Brian Williams is a Charlotte, North Carolina–based artist whose work reflects a lifelong career in visual storytelling. Working primarily in acrylics, Brian creates bold, contemporary paintings that blend elements of abstraction, expressionism, graphic design, and figurative art. His work is characterized by strong composition, unexpected color, expressive mark-making, and a willingness to move between refined representation and looser, more stylized forms.
Rather than being confined to a single visual language, Brian approaches each painting as its own creative problem. His subjects range from people and animals to familiar cultural imagery, often reinterpreted through exaggerated color, simplified shapes, texture, and abstraction. Some pieces are playful and graphic; others are quieter, more emotional, or deliberately imperfect. What connects them is an interest in creating work that has presence, something visually striking from across the room but with enough detail, texture, and personality to reward a closer look.
Brian's approach to painting grew from decades spent as a professional designer and creative director. He co-founded Williams, Collins Design & Development, a California-based creative agency, before moving to Charlotte and serving as Creative Director and later Vice President of Creative Services & On-Air Promotions at INSP. and FOX Sports, where he built and led an on-air promotions team creating national campaigns for some of the biggest events and brands in sports.
That career shaped the way Brian sees art today. Years spent thinking about imagery, typography, composition, emotion, and how to capture someone's attention in a matter of seconds continue to influence his paintings. But painting has also given him something his commercial career rarely allowed, the freedom to create without a brief, a brand guideline, or a predetermined answer.
Today, Brian continues to explore that freedom, experimenting with subject matter, materials, color, and style while developing a body of work that is distinctly his own.
Original artwork and commissions are available. Brian welcomes commissioned projects and enjoys working with collectors to create one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by a particular subject, photograph, idea, or space. While commissions are created in his artistic style rather than as strict reproductions, collaboration is an important part of the process.
